Here's a text interview I conducted with Richard Barton, medievalist and author of the upcoming Arden Vul megadungeon from Expeditious Retreat Press. 1. Tell me about your personal rpg history. when did you begin playing D&D, and with what edition? Favorite retro-clone, if any? I started with the Holmes Basic set, purchased at Heritage Hobby in Needham, MA, in late 1978, when I was in 7th grade. This was the printing with B1 ( In Search of the Unknown ) and real dice (not chits). I still have that copy of B1, with the dungeon map pretty faded from all the times we reused the dungeon, penciling in new monsters each time to 'shake things up'. My buddy Chris got the Monster Manual pretty quickly after it appeared, and I got the Players Handbook soon thereafter. The Old School Encounters Reference is the fourth in the Classic Dungeon Designer's series for 1st edition AD&D and compatible with OSRIC.
